This devotional, from Pundayschool Episode 21, "The Container Hostage," is about the debt we invent out of somebody else's kindness. Its verse is Romans 13:8: "Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law" (NIV). Nobody ever sent a bill for the container of leftovers, the favor, or the kindness we still have not "paid back." We wrote that invoice ourselves. Somebody sends us home with leftovers after the shared meal at church, in their nice container, the good kind, clear plastic with a deep blue lid. "Bring it back whenever," they say. Whenever. We eat the food. We wash the container until it squeaks. And then, without anyone asking us to, we invent a rule: it cannot go back empty. It has to go back full of something impressive.

A real kindness, set down gently. The dread has not started yet.

We do not cook anything impressive. So it waits. Week two, we push it behind the toaster. Week three, we cover it with a towel, the way you cover a birdcage, because by now it is not a container, it is a witness. It's been three weeks. I have to move to a new town. Nobody said full. Nobody said impressive. Nobody ever sent a bill. We wrote it ourselves.

Paul lands the correction in one short verse to a church he had never even visited: let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. Love was the whole transaction. The container was only ever the packaging.

Father, thank you that grace never kept a receipt. Forgive me for turning a simple kindness into a bill only I could see, and for hiding the very thing I was only ever asked to return. Thank you that the debt you actually care about is not the impressive one I keep trying to invent, but the plain, ordinary debt to love the people in front of me. Teach me to walk things back empty, with nothing to prove, and to say thank you and mean it. Thank you for loving me with nothing left owing. Amen.

One step for today

Think of the small, ordinary kindness you have been sitting on, the one nobody is actually waiting on, the one only you have turned into a debt. You do not need to feel guilty about how long it has been sitting there. You just need to notice the towel you put over it.

Walk it back empty, and say thank you. That is not a failed payment. That is the debt of love, paid on time.

What does Romans 13:8 mean?

Romans 13:8 says: "Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law." Paul has just finished talking about paying taxes and giving people what is owed them, and pivots to the one debt that is never fully settled: loving one another. Every other obligation can be paid off and closed. This one stays open on purpose.

Romans 13 opens with instructions about submitting to governing authorities and paying what is owed: taxes, revenue, respect, honor.
