One problem: the tape never goes back in on its own. Every length we pull out stays out, gathering around our own feet, until an ordinary step becomes a windmilling stumble. Comparison: now with built-in tripping hazard. The tape never once reached the people we aimed it at. It only ever caught us. Then Second Corinthians says the obvious thing: people who measure themselves by themselves are not wise.

Paul refuses to compare himself to rival teachers in Corinth who were commending themselves by measuring themselves against each other. He calls that not wise, because a measurement taken from yourself, using yourself as the ruler, is never an honest measurement of anything.
Because comparison is one of the quietest, most constant temptations in ordinary life, at church, at work, online, anywhere people can be measured against each other. Paul's answer is not to win the comparison contest, it is to refuse to play: the only commendation worth having is the Lord's, not our own and not the room's.
