Episode 3 · James 1:22
The Spiritual Gym Membership
We own a Bible the way we own a gym membership: proud to have it, rarely open it.
Pundayschool · Topic
Six episodes about the most comfortable gap in the Christian life: the one between hearing the word and doing something about it. One is about the Bible we own but never open, one is about the sermon we score out of five and forget by lunch, one is about the parts of guidance we quietly fold away, one is about the notification that arrives before the verse ever gets read, one is about the weed we always meant to pull, and one is about the quiet time we staged for a photo instead of actually having.
James 1:22 says 'Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says,' Luke 11:28 says the blessing belongs to those who hear the word of God and obey it, Psalm 119:105 says God's word is a lamp for the whole path, not just the part we like, Proverbs 4:25 says to fix your gaze straight ahead, Mark 4:18-20 says the worries of this life and the desires for other things choke the word before it can produce anything, and Matthew 6:5-6 says prayer performed to be seen has already collected its whole reward, while prayer offered in secret is rewarded by the Father who sees it. Pundayschool has six short comedy episodes about the gap between hearing and doing, each with a free devotional and study guide: The Spiritual Gym Membership, The Sermon Takeaway Menu, The Map Folded Wrong, The Digital Notification Trap, The Weed We Never Pulled, and The Aesthetic Quiet Time.
Episode 3 · James 1:22
We own a Bible the way we own a gym membership: proud to have it, rarely open it.
Episode 8 · Luke 11:28
Worship gets four stars, the sermon a solid three, coffee a clean five. Then a greeter with a clipboard asks which part we’re taking home. Silence.
Episode 19 · Psalm 119:105
We all like the parts of the map we agree with. So we fold away the turn we are not ready for, one neat crease at a time, until only the straight bit with the star on it still shows. Off we go, chin up, straight into the wall where the corridor actually turns. That was not on our map, we say, forgetting we are the ones who edited it off. Then Psalm 119:105 says the thing we folded away: your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path, the whole path, turn and all.
Episode 27 · Proverbs 4:25
This morning had one simple plan: open the Bible, read one verse. That was it. Then the phone lit up. One notification. We will just clear it, ten seconds, tops. The notification had a message, the message had a link, the link had a video, and now a man in an apron is explaining why we have been using salt incorrectly. We have never cared about salt. Suddenly, we have opinions. Another video starts. Our shoulder slowly becomes part of the sofa, and forty-five minutes quietly leave the building. Eventually we look up, blinking, still watching bread. How did I get to sourdough? We came looking for the Bread of Life. We left with a baking project. Time to confess: the problem is not always that we have no time for God. Sometimes we gave the time away, ten seconds at a time. Proverbs four, verse twenty-five: Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. So tomorrow: verse first. Dot later. The notification can wait. It already proved it knows how.
Episode 33 · Mark 4:18-20
A pot gets moved four times this year: better light, a new windowsill, a new group, a new plan, a new podcast, third playlist this year. Still nothing. Must be the seed, never us. But wrapped once around the stem, in the same soil the whole time, is a weed, never once pulled. Mark 4:18-20: the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desires for other things come in and choke the word - not the window, not the seed, the weed. So today, don't move it again. Reach in, and pull the one thing that's actually choking it.
Episode 35 · Matthew 6:5-6
Coffee at the perfect angle. Bible turned to a verse that photographs well. Even the highlighter color gets picked for the photo, not the verse. Enough shots that we forget to actually read it. Matthew 6:5-6: the people who pray to be seen have already received their reward in full - but the Father who sees what is done in secret is the one who rewards what's real. So today: no photo. Just close the door.
"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."
James 1:22, NIV
James 1:22 warns that listening to God's word without acting on it is a form of self-deception, like glancing in a mirror and immediately forgetting your own face. The episode The Spiritual Gym Membership translates it for today: we own a Bible the way we own a gym membership, proud to have it and rarely opening it. Owned is not opened.
Hearing is the start, not the finish. In Luke 11:28 Jesus says the blessing belongs to those who hear the word and keep it. The Sermon Takeaway Menu is about a congregation that can score a sermon expertly but cannot name one thing they are taking home. One line, lived out, beats five stars.
Try the practice The Sermon Takeaway Menu ends on: write down one line from the sermon, and live it before the next one. Not the whole outline, one line. It turns Sunday from a review into a takeaway.
Open one page today. That is the whole ask, and it is exactly how The Spiritual Gym Membership ends. Grace holds the falling-apart, well-used, actually-lived kind of faith, not the pristine kind, so a creased page is a good sign, not a bad one.
In this part of the parable of the sower, Jesus says some people hear God's word, but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desires for other things come in and choke it before it produces anything. The Weed We Never Pulled pictures it as a plant moved from spot to spot all year while the actual weed wrapped around its stem never once gets pulled.
